There are two important changes with Money 4.0.8 – one is an easier way to sync between Money for iPhone and Money for iPad. Another change is about QI, and I am going to describe it in another blog post this week.
Synchronization between various instances of Money is now possible via bluetooth. We are currently running this sort of synchronization in a testing mode so please report if you recognize any room for improvement.
It is going to be possible to sync data not just between Money for iPad and Money for iPhone, but between any instances of Money, either on iPads, iPhones or iPods touch. If you have 2 iPhones in your family, and both of them have Money 4.0.8 installed, you can try to sync data right away. If you have iPad and iPhone versions of Money, you need to wait until Money for iPad version 1.0.2 becomes available on the App Store (already submitted).
Ability to synchronize data will make it possible to manage your finances together with other people (such as members of your family) using different devices. It works in an exceptionally easy way: you need to go to sync, and the iPhone starts searching for another device.
Once a device is found, you agree to connect with it, and the data is shared. That’s it! Now both devices have the same data.
For example, one person has added a new budget entry, and another person has added a lot of new transactions. After syncing the first person will get the new transactions, and the second one will get the budget entry. Besides, both persons will see the same balance and other entries. This way you can sync as many devices as you want.
Please note that during the first synchronization you will be prompted to choose whether you want to replace (and here you are going to get someone’s data) or to merge your data.
You can delete those new entries that you have got this way, e.g. categories or accounts of the other person; and you will always be able to recover them by going to settings and choosing “show deleted records”.
There are several important things about it: synchronization may take a lot of time – please do not turn the devices off. There are some chances that your devices do not find each other – in this case you need to close the form and try again.
Money for iPad is available on the App Store from this link. It has a new advanced interface and more capable of various tasks. Money for iPhone is available from this link. It is a classical handy application for the iPhone that helps you to manage your personal finances in the most comprehensive manner.
